About Grenada
Saint George's, the capital, is widely considered one of the most picturesque harbours in the Caribbean, with colourful buildings cascading down hillsides toward a horseshoe bay. Grenada gained independence from Britain in 1974, but its modern history was dramatically shaped by a Marxist revolution in 1979 and the subsequent US military intervention in 1983 β one of the defining episodes of Cold War confrontation in the Caribbean.
Grenada has rebuilt itself as a stable, tourism-oriented economy with a diversified base that includes agriculture, light manufacturing, and education. St. George's University is a major medical school that attracts thousands of international students, making education a significant export earner. The island's underwater sculpture park β an artificial reef of bronze figures β is one of the Caribbean's most unusual diving attractions.
